LAMP freshmen prepare to plant the garden
|
The LAMP garden has nearly quadrupled in size
Ninth grade biology students have been busy this spring expanding the LAMP garden started by biology students last year. The garden is now almost four times the size it was last year. Students, assisted by their teacher Mr. Chad Smith, constructed a variety of above ground and window boxes, filled them with high quality topsoil and other soil materials, and then planted a wide array of seasonal vegetables and fruits. The students also covered the entire garden area in weed proof mats and pine straw earlier in the year. Next the class plans on engineering an automatic irrigation system to keep the garden watered during the summer.
Last year's garden was very productive yielding several hundred pounds of tomatoes, cucumbers, okra, bell peppers, watermelons, corn, and strawberries. The project culminated with a watermelon eating party for the students this past fall. This year's garden is already experiencing growth. Stay tuned for updates.
Mr. Smith and the Honors Biology freshmen would like to thank GroSouth, J & K Materials and Trucking, and Jim and Jan Johnson for their gracious assistance in helping this year's garden get started.
